Vasami Dominant As Jackals Take Advantage Of Early Bears Blunders

New Jersey Jackals News Release

Newark, N.J. - The New Jersey Jackals took advantage of a trio of Newark Bears' miscues to plate three runs in the first inning and starter Chris Vasami and a pair of relievers stifled the Newark offense the rest of the way as the Jackals shut out the Bears, 4-0, on a hot and humid Wednesday morning at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

Batting leadoff for just the second time this season, second baseman Argenis Reyes paced the Jackals' offense, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored as New Jersey snapped Newark's six-game winning streak.

Vasami, who began his conversion from the infield to the mound with the Bears last season, dominated his former team, allowing three hits over 5 1/3 shutout innings. Steve Fox followed and surrendered just one hit in 1 2/3 innings of work before Jared Locke faced five batters and recorded six outs to seal the victory. Vasami picked up the victory to improve to 1-1.

After back-to-back singles by Reyes and Mike DeJesus to begin the contest, New Jersey took advantage of a trio of Bears' blunders to plate three runs in the first inning. Leonard Davis hit a dribbler back to the mound, which Newark starter Aaron Kalb threw away at first to push Reyes across with the game's first run. The Jackals tacked on two more runs on a passed ball and a wild pitch to open up a 3-0 advantage.

After allowing the first four New Jersey hitters of the game to reach base, Kalb settled down and retired 14 consecutive batters prior to a Reyes bunt single with two outs in the fifth. Kalb, who yielded just two earned runs in six innings, took the loss in his Bears' debut.

Leading 3-0, the Jackals tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh against Newark reliever Kyle Morrison when Reyes and DeJesus reached on back-to-back two-out singles and center fielder Leonard Davis ripped an RBI double off the left field wall.

The Jackals and Bears conclude their three-game series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. when the series shifts to Yogi Berra Stadium in Little Falls. New Jersey will send right-hander Phil Bartleski (0-0, 6.75 ERA) to the mound for his first start of the season. Eric Eden (2-0, 2.13 ERA), who was slated to take the hill for the Bears, was placed on the disabled list on Wednesday; Newark has yet to announce who will take his place. Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live Jackals webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com
