Worcester Tornadoes News Release

The Tornadoes held a 4-3 lead entering the bottom of the eighth inning on Wednesday afternoon, but a three-run inning gave the Pittsfield Colonials a 6-4 victory at Waconah Park. Albert Ayala was tagged with the loss, offering multiple runs up in one outing for the first time this season.

The Colonials took the first lead of the ballgame in the bottom of the fifth, breaking the scoreless tie with a Chris Torres RBI single. In the next half inning, the Tornadoes batted around and plated three. Nick Salotti's two-RBI double gave Worcester the lead, and Ryan Crespi walked with the bases loaded to make it 3-1.

Pittsfield tied the game with a pair in the bottom half with doubles from Jerod Edmondson and Billy Mottram.

In the next half inning, the Tornadoes retook a one-run lead. Alex Trezza beat out a potential double play ball, scoring Abraham Nunez, who singled on the first pitch of the seventh.

Five Colonials batters reached base and three of them scored against the Tornadoes, with the second RBI single of the day for Torres. The two-run hit capped the scoring at 6-4. Matt Lyons earned the save with a scoreless ninth, striking out two.

Ryan Crespi had his third straight multiple hit plus single RBI game, while Mark Minicozzi went 3-for-4. Minicozzi has reached base three times or more in each of the last three games.

Shawn Gilblair went 5.1 innings in a no decision, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. Sean Gregory came in to relieve Gilblair and pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, striking out four.

The Worcester will wrap up its three-game set with Pittsfield on Thursday night with a 7:00pm first pitch. After a weekend series with the New Jersey Jackals, the Tornadoes will be back at home on Monday for their first game of the 2011 season against the Newark Bears.
