Jackals Shut out Bears, 4-0, Ending Newark's Six-Game Win Streak

NEWARK, N.J. (JUNE 8, 2011) - Former New York Mets infielder Argenis Reyes had three hits and scored two runs and former Newark Bears pitcher Chris Vasami pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings against his former team, leading the New Jersey Jackals to a 4-0 victory over the Bears Wednesday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for Newark (8-5), while the Jackals improved to 7-5 and took a 3-2 lead in the Essex County Challenge Cup series. After recording double-digits in hits over the last five games, the Bears managed just four hits against three Jackals pitchers.
The Jackals drew first blood in the top of the first inning against starter Aaron Kalb, making his debut with the Bears.
Reyes and Mike DeJesus had consecutive singles and Leonard Davis reached on a throwing error by Kalb, a play that scored Reyes. DeJesus scored on a passed ball and Davis later scored on a wild pitch, giving the Jackals a 3-0 lead.
Former Bear Chris Vasami (1-0) was outstanding in his start for the Jackals, allowing just three hits and no runs, striking out four. Steve Fox replaced Vasami in the sixth and got out of trouble that inning. Jared Locke pitched the final two innings, allowing no hits and striking out one, to record the save.
The Jackals added another run in the top of the seventh inning on three consecutive hits off Bears reliever Kyle Morrison. Reyes reached on a single, followed by a single from DeJesus and a double from Davis, pushing the lead to 4-0.
Kalb (0-1), the Middletown, NJ native and former Rutgers University hurler, pitched well in his first Bears appearance, allowing just two earned runs over six innings, striking out six.
The Bears now take to the road for the next seven games, first facing the Jackals for one game of the Essex County Challenge Cup Thursday night, then on to Brockton, Massachusetts for three games with the Brockton Rox, followed by three games against the Worcester Tornadoes.
The Bears return home next Friday night, June 17, when they take on the Brockton Rox, managed by former Boston Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner, at 5:35 p.m. to start a seven-game home stand at ''The Den."
The Bears' 2011 season is played in the Can-Am professional baseball league, after spending 12 years in the Atlantic League. The Can-Am League, which also features neighboring rival the New Jersey Jackals, runs its season from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
