Vancouver Giants Defeat Portland 5-3

The Vancouver Giants won their 400th regular season game in franchise history, defeating the Portland Winterhawks 5-3 in front of the largest crowd of the season, 12, 103 fans. Jordan Martinook picked up his 2nd hat trick of the season and Adam Morrison made 46 saves to lead the Giants to their 3rd straight victory. Glen Hanlon earned the win as head coach, taking over for Don Hay who left to join Team Canada at the World Juniors.

With Teddy Bear's at the ready, the Giants didn't waste anytime getting on the board; 2:54 into the game Brett Kulak scored his 2nd goal of the season on a nice feed from Cain Franson to put the Giants up 1-0. The 12,103 fans responded by throwing thousands of stuffed animals on the ice with all proceeds going to the CKNW Orphans' Fund and The Province Empty Stocking Fund. Jordan Martinook added to the Giants lead with his 18th of the season and then Brendan Gallagher followed up with his 24th goal of the year to to put the Giants up 3-0 8:21 into the period. Portland would get on the board before the period was out to cut the lead to 3-1 after 20 minutes.

The Winterhawks took advantage of a power play opportunity in the second period to get to within one, but Martinook countered with his 2nd of the game on the power play to restore Vancouver's two goal advantage. Adam Morrison continued his stellar play in net, making 11 saves in the period and 29 through two periods. The Giants led 4-2 after 40 minutes.

Once again the Winterhawks would get themselves back within one on the power play, scoring with just over 13 minutes left in regulation. The Giants would kill off 2 power plays late in the period and Martinook would add an empty netter for his 3rd goal of the game and 20th of the season to seal the deal and give Vancouver a 5-3 victory. Morrison made 46 saves on the night earning 1st star honours. The Giants finished 2-for-4 on the power play, while the Winterhawks went 2-for-7.

The Giants are back in action tomorrow night when the play host to the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Puck drops at 7:00 pm at the Pacific Coliseum. The pregame show begins at 6:30 pm on AM 650. It is 'Fill The Rink On Renfrew' night in support of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. The Giants are asking all fans to bring a non-perishable food item or a baby item to donate to the food bank.
