The Portland Winterhawks (20-10-2-1) dropped a 5-3 decision in Vancouver Friday against the Giants (20-10-1-1) in a game in which they held a 49-31 advantage in shots on goal.

The Giants jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by Brett Kulak, Jordan Martinook and Brendan Gallagher. The Hawks got on the board at the 14:05 mark on a goal by defenseman Troy Rutkowski to cut it to 3-1 going into the second period.

The Hawks cut it to 3-2 when Brendan Leipsic scored a power play goal at the 6:49 mark of the second, but the Giants went back up by two when Martinook scored his second of the game, a power play goal to make it 4-2 going into the third period.

Portland once again got within one 6:34 into third period when Brad Ross scored a power play goal to make it 4-3. Ross extended his goal scoring streak to four games, and with an assist on the play Sven Bartschi extended his points streak to nine games.

The Hawks pressed throughout the third searching for the equalizer, outshooting the Giants 18-6 in the frame, but late in the third with Mac Carruth on the bench for an extra attacker, Martinook completed the hat trick with an empty net goal with 12 seconds remaining to seal the Giants' 5-3 win.

The Hawks were 2-7 on the power play, while the Giants were 2-4 with the man advantage.

Mac Carruth made 26 saves on 30 shots, while Vancouver netminder Adam Morrison made 46 saves on 49 shots.

The Winterhawks are back on the ice Sunday in Kennewick, WA when they take on the Tri-City Americans in a battle between the top two teams in the U.S. Division.
