Vancouver Finishes WHL Regular Season with a Victory

The Vancouver Giants finished off the regular season in style by shutting out the Everett Silvertips 5-0 Sunday night at the Pacific Coliseum in front of 8,418 fans. Mark Segal made 28 saves for his 6th shutout of the season, tied for the second most in the WHL this year. Vancouver finished the season series vs. the Silvertips 5-1-0-0 with 3 shutouts.

Vancouver struggled out of the gate being outshot 8-0;however, they weathered the storm and took advantage of their first power play opportunity as Brendan Gallagher banged home his 44th goal of the year to give the home team a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes. Shots were 9-8 in favour of Vancouver after one period.

It didn't take long to add to the lead in the second period. Spencer Bennett took a nice feed from Cain Franson and pocketed his 36th goal of the year 1:17 into the frame to put Vancouver up 2-0. David Musil wristed home his 6th of the season later in the period during 4-on-4 action to give the Giants a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes.

The Giants were very effective with their power play opportunities in the third period, scoring just 5 seconds into the man advantage on two occasions. Spencer Bennett scored his 2nd of the night and 37th of the year, while Neil Manning hammered home his 15th of the campaign. That would conclude the scoring. Mark Segal made 28 saves, including 11 in the final period to pick up his 6th shutout of the year. 5-0 was the final.

With the victory Vancouver finishes in 5th place in the Western Conference and will play the Tri-City Americans in the opening round of the playoffs beginning Friday March 25th in Kennewick, Washington. Game time is 7:00pm. The pregame show begins at 6:30pm on AM 650.
