ValleyCats Top Spinners 9-4; Go for Sweep Sunday

TROY, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats continued their superb offensive production in a 9-4 toppling of the visiting Lowell Spinners in front of 5,708 fans at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on Saturday night.

After scoring seven runs in Friday night's victory over Lowell, Tri-City wasted little time putting runs on the board in game two of the series as 'Cats third baseman J.D. Davis drilled a 1-1 pitch from Spinners starting pitcher Heri Quevedo over the left field wall, giving the ValleyCats a 2-0 lead.

Two innings later, Ryan Bottger joined in on the homer barrage, crushing a solo shot over the right field fence for his first career long ball, pushing the 'Cats lead to 3-0.

Although the ValleyCats used the home run to get the scoring started early in the game, they continued to push runs across as the game went on in a more meticulous fashion. After the Spinners tacked on a run in the fourth to cut Tri-City's lead to 3-1, Jose Solano stole home after nearly being picked off in a failed suicide squeeze attempt to give the 'Cats a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the inning.

The scoring continued in the fifth frame, as Alex Hernandez and Mott Hyde drove in runs with back-to-back singles and Bobby Boyd knocked home a pair of runs with a hit of his own, Hyde then concluded the ValleyCats offensive onslaught with an RBI double in the sixth. The nine runs were more than enough to keep the Lowell Spinners at bay.

Left-handed knuckleball pitcher Blaine Sims posted his strongest outing of the season, lasting five frames, striking out three and allowing only one run on five hits. Right-handed reliever Derick Velazquez also had a strong showing for Tri-City, finishing up the game by striking out the side in the ninth inning.

The ValleyCats and Spinners will return to "The Joe" on Sunday for the final game of a three-game series. The contest will also be the last matchup between the two squads this season. Tri-City will attempt to go for the sweep with RHP Luis Ordosgoitti (1-1, 6.00) on the mound. LHP Jake Drehoff (0-0, 4.42) will get the start for Lowell.
