Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Gonzalez, Parry Lead Aberdeen to 3-2 Win
Jay Gonzalez and Bennett Parry helped lead Aberdeen to a 3-2 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones at MCU Park last night. Gonzalez was 2-4 at the plate with an RBI single and a run scored. He also recorded the IronBirds' seventh outfield assist of the season, wiping out a lead off double from Brooklyn's Jhoan Urena as he tried to stretch it into a triple. Bennett Parry came on in relief in the fifth inning and was fantastic. In five innings of relief, he allowed five hits and one run, striking out six. He earned the win, improving to 1-0. Parry allowed more than one base runner in only one inning, the ninth, and in that ninth inning worked out of a two on, no out jam to secure the win for Aberdeen.
Gonzalez Taking Flight
Jay Gonzalez had another big night last night. He started the season with three hits in his first 16 at-bats. After the season-opening series, however, Gonzalez went 0-21 over his next six games. All of that changed on June 29th against the Renegades, as he went 2-4 and has recorded at least two hits in each of his last four games, including a 4-5 outing on July 2nd against the Staten Island Yankees. Over the recent hot stretch, he has raised his batting average from .081 to .250, going 10-15 with three doubles and two RBIs.
Chleborad, Walker Solid
Orioles' 2014 draft picks Tanner Chleborad and Josh Walker had solid outings for the IronBirds last night. Chleborad (16th round) got the start and pitched two innings, allowing two hits and a walk, while recording a strikeout. Walker (22nd round) allowed one run, a walk, and a hit over two innings, but struck out four Cyclones in relief.
On The Mound Tonight...
The IronBirds will send Pat Connaughton to the hill tonight, looking for the series win in Brooklyn. He made his professional debut on July 1st against the Staten Island Yankees, pitching a perfect first inning in a game the IronBirds would win 5-4. Connaughton was selected by the Orioles in the fourth round of this year's draft out of Notre Dame. He will be opposed by Brooklyn's Casey Meisner. Meisner will be making his fourth start of the season, and third against the IronBirds. In two previous outings against Aberdeen, he has pitched 11 innings, allowing 10 hits and six runs, striking out 14.
