No Soup For Brooklyn, Aberdeen Clobbers Cyclones 18-2

Brooklyn, NY - The Aberdeen IronBirds pounded out a season high 18 hits along with 18 runs, pounding the host Brooklyn Cyclones 18-2 on Seinfeld Night at MCU Park.

Aberdeen got on the board right away in the first inning. Jay Gonzalez led off with a bouncer to short that was mishandled by Cyclones' short stop Amed Rosario. Gonzalez stole second and advanced to third when Justin Viele laid down a sacrifice bunt. He scored on Alex Murphy's RBI single, making it 1-0 Aberdeen.

The IronBirds put up three more runs in the third, sending seven batters to the plate. Murphy hit another RBI single scoring Gonzalez, making it 2-0. Murphy and Jamill Moquete would each score later in the inning off of Cyclones' starter Casey Meisner.

Aberdeen blew the game open in the fourth and take an 11-0 lead. They scored seven runs on six hits and sent 12 batters to the plate. Gonzalez, Murphy, Veloz, Moquete, Steve Wilkerson, Riley Palmer, and Tad Gold would all score in the inning, and Casey Meisner's night was over. He went 3.1 innings, allowing nine hits, nine runs (six earned), walking two and striking out three.

The IronBirds scored five more in the fifth and twice more in the seventh to take the 18-2 win.

Riley Palmer tied a franchise record with five base hits in the game (a single, three doubles, and a triple), finishing a home run shy of the cycle. Alex Murphy finished with three hits, while Jay Gonzalez and Justin Viele each had two hit games. Tad Gold collected his first professional base hit in the win.

Aberdeen was 10 for 25 with runners in scoring position.

Pat Connaughton got the start for Aberdeen, going two innings, striking out three. David Hess earned the win for the IronBirds, pitching the third and fourth innings. He allowed just one hit and two walks, striking out four. Dariel Delgado earned his first save of the season, pitching the final three innings.

The IronBirds will look for the sweep tomorrow, with first pitch at MCU Park scheduled for 1 p.m.
