Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats (28-19) defeated the Empire State Greys (10-36) 18-4 on Wednesday at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. Every Tri-City batter reached base safely. It was the most runs scored for the ValleyCats this year since they won 24-12 against the Gateway Grizzlies in Sauget, IL on June 11.

Pavin Parks greeted Clarke Davenport with an infield single back to him in the first. Cito Culver walked, and Aaron Altherr was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Parks scored as Robbie Merced reached on an error from Jaylen Smith. Zach Biermann knocked in two with a single to provide the ValleyCats with a 3-0 lead.

Tri-City doubled its lead in the second. Ian Walters led off with a solo homer. Parks and Culver walked before Altherr was hit by a pitch. Jakob Goldfarb then brought in a pair with a double to pull the ValleyCats ahead, 6-0.

Walters went yard again in the third with an opposite field home run. His third long ball of the year made it a 7-0 affair. Walters joined Carson McCusker, Trey Hair, Culver, Goldfarb, and Jaxon Hallmark as the sixth ValleyCat to record a multi-homer game this season.

Empire State got on the board in the fourth. Josh Sears singled off Elijah Gill. Manny Garcia followed suit with a two-run jack to cut the deficit to 7-2.

The Greys struck again in the fifth. Michael Gulino singled, and Jordan Scott had a two-run blast to trim the 'Cats lead to 7-4.

Tri-City responded with an eight-run fifth to take a 15-4 advantage over Empire State. The ValleyCats sent 14 men to the plate in that frame. Highlights included a two-run single from Walters off of Dawson Young. Additionally, Culver and Altherr each had an RBI walk, and Goldfarb plated a run after being hit by a pitch.

Tri-City was hit by a pitch four times by Empire State pitching, and walked 12 times. The ValleyCats cashed in on the free passes in the seventh. Altherr and Goldfarb worked back-to-back walks off Will MaClean before Merced cranked a three-run tater to put Tri-City on top, 18-4. It was Merced's fourth roundtripper in the 2023 campaign.

Gill (5-2) earned the win. He tossed five frames, yielding four runs on six hits, walking none, and striking out one. The bullpen was terrific as Elliot Carney and Blake Workman (in his independent ball debut) each tossed two shutout innings. They allowed just two singles, walked none, and punched out nine batters.

Davenport (0-2) received the loss. He pitched two innings, allowing seven runs, four earned on five hits, walking four, and striking out three.

Tri-City concludes its three-game series with the rubber match against Empire State tomorrow, Thursday, July 6 at "The Joe". First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
