ValleyCats Drop Midweek Opener at Washington

WASHINGTON, PA - Despite holding a one-run lead through five-and-a-half innings, the Tri-City ValleyCats (39-38) could not end their losing skid to open its midweek road series at the Washington Wild Things (43-35) Tuesday evening. The 'Cats dropped their fifth consecutive contest with a 5-2 decision at Wild Things Park, and have fallen back into a tie with Equipe Quebec for the top of the Atlantic Division.

Following two scoreless innings to open the 'Cats final regular season series against the Things, Connor Lien laced an RBI triple and Jhon Nunez followed it up with an RBI groundout to give the visitors a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Washington responded with an RBI double in the bottom of the frame to collect back a run. Following no-decision outings from starters Darren Osby and Jose Cruz, Washinton knotted up the ballgame at two in the bottom of the sixth, and displayed a crooked inning in the seventh to secure the three-run victory.

Washington's Ben Vicini (7-0) was awarded the win with a scoreless inning that included a pair of strikeouts. while Tri-City's Patrick Murphy (1-2) took the loss by giving up two runs and walking a pair. Lien went 2-4 to lead the 'Cats offensively in the loss.

Tri-City will look to get back in the win column when it takes the field at Washington on Wednesday, August 25 at 7:00 PM. The team will be back at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium to begin a six-game home stand on Friday, August 28 against the Sussex County Miners at 7:00 PM on Yankee Trails Night and Youth Baseball Night. Click Here for tickets.
