ValleyCats Drop Midweek Opener at Rockland
June 1, 2021 - Frontier League (FL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
POMONA, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats (1-3) continued a six-game road trip to begin the 2021 season by opening a three-game road series at the New York Boulders (2-3). The 'Cats fell, 7-2, to their Atlantic Division rivals to begin midweek action at Palisades Credit Union Park.
Coming off a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Sussex County Miners on Monday, the 'Cats fell victim to another slow start against their closest geographical Frontier League foe. The Boulders took hold of an early lead, with designated hitter Kevonte Mitchell scoring a pair with a 2 RBI single to center field.
Tri-City stranded six batters through the eighth inning en-route to being out-hit, 11-7, with right-fielder Carson Maxwell recording his first multi-hit outing as a 'Cat (2-4) in the loss. The visitors used a walk and a single to get a runner to third in the top of the fifth, but could not break through on the board, while New York tacked on an insurance run in the sixth via an RBI single to left and four in the seventh on a grand slam.
The 'Cats did have a stroke of offense left in them on the night, with Maxwell unloading a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to get on the board. The Boulders were led to victory behind a career performance from southpaw Dan Wirchansky (1-0), who earned the win with seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out 12 to tie a New York franchise record. Tri-City's Parker Kelly (0-1) took the loss in his franchise debut on the mound, surrendering a pair of earned runs on four hits and striking out one in four innings.
Tri-City will look to end its three-game losing skid and knot up the series on Wednesday, June 2 at 6:30 PM.
