Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats defeated the Staten Island Yankees 16-3 on Saturday, clinching the series sweep and extending their win streak to a season-high seven games.
After winning the first game of the series on Thursday 14-0, and taking game two 9-7, the 'Cats offense reached new levels on Saturday. But the Yankees did strike first, as Staten Island designated hitter Isaias Tejeda hit a solo home run in the second inning, followed by a two-run homer by teammate Nathan Mikolas, putting Tri-City in a early 3-2 hole.
But the Yankees were not in the lead for long, as the 'Cats first six batters reached and scored in the bottom of the second inning. The scoring was capped by first baseman A.J. Reed's one-out grand slam smashed over the right field wall.
Reed's home run, his fifth of the season, was the first grand slam hit by a ValleyCat this year. The 2014 second round draft pick out of the University of Kentucky finished the night 2-2 with three walks, three runs scored, and four runs batted in.
However, Reed's stellar offensive showing was only one of many dominating performances at the plate by ValleyCats hitters. All nine batters in the starting lineup finished the game with at least one hit, while 11 'Cats scored at least one run. Other than Reed, two other Tri-City batters hit home runs, as right fielder Ryan Bottger hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning, followed by a solo shot by designated hitter Terrell Joyce two batters later.
The 16 Tri-City runs were the most scored by a ValleyCats team since July 31, 2008, when the 'Cats defeated The Hudson Valley Renegades 17-9.
The scoring barrage on Saturday was a fitting end to the series sweep over the Yankees. During the three-game set, Tri-City outscored Staten Island by a combined score of 39-10.
On the mound, starting pitcher Joe Musgrove (4-1) earned the win for Tri-City. The right-hander threw five frames, striking out four, and did not allow a run after Staten Island scored their three runs in the second inning.
Tri-City relief pitchers Bryan Radziewski and Vince Wheelend followed Musgrove, combining to strike out six batters, without allowing a run over the final four innings.
The ValleyCats will now head to Aberdeen, Maryland to take on the IronBirds in a three-game road series. On the mound for the ValleyCats will be RHP Luis Ordosgoitti (2-2, 4.96). He will face Aberdeen LHP John Means (0-1, 4.82).
