Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD- In a game that remained tied until the ninth inning, the IronBirds fell to the Connecticut Tigers, 2-0, after spectacular pitching performances from both teams.
After David Hess retired the first three batters he saw in the top of the first, the IronBirds put together an offensive threat in the bottom of the inning. Jay Gonzalez reached first on a throwing error by Tiger third baseman Joey Pankake and then Alex Murphy singled to right. The threat was short lived though, as Connecticut starter Fernando Perez retired the next three batters he saw.
The IronBirds came close to taking the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Justin Viele, with Riley Palmer at second base and Oswill Lartiguez at first base, smacked a ball to right field, but Palmer was cut down trying to score the first run of the game.
Again in the next inning, with two outs, the IronBirds had Jay Gonzalez on first base with Alex Murphy at the plate. Murphy hit a double down the left field line, but Gonzalez was cut down trying to score.
David Hess departed the game after 4.0 innings, allowing just three hits, no runs, and striking out five. He was replaced by Luc Rennie in the fifth inning.
Rennie ran into some trouble in the top of the seventh inning. Tigers' third baseman Steven Fuentes, who replaced the ejected Joey Pankake, single to third base, but reached third base on a throwing error from Austin Anderson. Rennie ended the Connecticut scoring attempt, striking out Domingo Leyba to end the inning.
The Connecticut Tigers broke the tie in the top of the ninth inning, as Michael Gerber smacked a two-run homerun into left field to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Aberdeen was unable to get anything going in the bottom of the ninth, as closer Paul Voelker retired Riley Palmer, Oswill Lartiguez, and pinch-hitter Hector Veloz.
With the 2-0 victory, Connecticut takes the series. The IronBirds begin a three-game set tomorrow against the Tri-City ValleyCats.
