Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Walk-off Win
The IronBirds prevailed over the Tigers thanks to a Riley Palmer walk-off line drive in the 10th inning. The game started off as a pitching duel, as the teams combined for only five hits heading into the ninth inning. The IronBirds were up 1-0, but RHP Nigel Nootbaar gave up one in the inning, forcing the game into extras after the IronBirds failed to score in the bottom of the inning. After keeping the Tigers off the board in the top of the 10th, CF Jay Gonzalez led off with a triple, and was then brought home by a Riley Palmer line drive into center; Palmer was pinch hitting for SS Justin Viele and hadn't played at all prior to his at bat.
Parry Proves He's the Ace
Heading into the game LHP Bennett Parry was seemingly the IronBirds most consistent and solid pitcher in the rotation, and last night he solidified himself as their ace. In his five innings pitched, Parry didn't allow any runs, while giving up only two hits and striking out two to earn an ERA of 1.09 - the best on the team out of the pitchers who have pitched more than 10 innings.
Palmer Plays the Hero
Prior to pinch hitting for Viele and eventually hitting the game-winning line drive, Palmer hadn't even stepped foot on the field last night. He had played the night before, but went 0-3 with two K's, showing that Manager Matt Merullo made a gutsy call going with the 2014 31st round pick out of Southern New Hampshire.
Nootbaar Hangs on, Gets the Win
RHP Nigel Nootbaar relieved RHP Stefan Crichton in the ninth, and was given the task of protecting the IronBirds 1-0 lead. However, Nootbaar walked the first batter and then gave up a single down the third base line. The next batter then hit a sacrifice bunt, and with the ball rolling toward Nootbaar, he ran past the ball thinking another IronBird player would pick it up, but that didn't happen and the bases loaded up. The next batter singled to bring home the tying run. Nootbaar then struck out the next three batters to get out of the inning. He remained in for the 10th didn't give up any more runs.
On the Mound Tonight...
RHP David Hess will be making his second start and fifth appearance for the IronBirds. Hess (1-1) has been solid, as he has the teams best ERA (0.96) in his 9.1 innings pitched. Hess has only allowed six hits and one earned run while notching seven K's.
