-SPIKES FINISH SERIES WITH AUBURN TONIGHT: The State College Spikes hold an eight-game lead over Williamsport in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division as they once again face division opposition tonight when the Auburn Doubledays come to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the last game of a three-game set. The series is the first action between the two clubs in State College this season. The Spikes swept a pair of games from the Doubledays at Falcon Park in Auburn from July 7-8. State College is 42-42 all-time against Auburn, with a 22-20 edge in games played at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
-LAST GAME: Alex De Leon got the State College Spikes offense going with a first-inning home run, and the Spikes scored nine runs in the third inning on their way to a franchise record for runs in a single game in a 17-4 win over the Auburn Doubledays on Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
De Leon's two-run shot to left field in the first, his seventh home run of the year, gave State College a lead it would not relinquish. The Spikes then brought 15 batters to the plate in the third, with Robelys Reyes delivering two of his three hits in the inning. Collin Radack, Danny Diekroeger, and De Leon both reached base twice, and Chase Raffield contributed a key three-run double in the frame.
De Leon reached base five times, adding a double and three walks to his long ball. Reyes and Raffield each produced four RBI in the game, while Luis Cruz went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Dewin Perez tossed seven quality innings for the win in his longest start of the year. The left-hander gave up three runs on six hits and three walks, striking out two over the course of the night. Joe Scanio finished the game for the Spikes with two one-run innings on the mound.
-GOMBER GETS THE BALL FOR SPIKES: Left-hander Austin Gomber makes his fifth start as a professional for State College tonight. Gomber made his longest outing for the Spikes last time out, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits, a hit batsman and a walk while striking out two. The southpaw, who was drafted by the Cardinals out of Florida Atlantic in this year's fourth round, has allowed just three earned runs over 12 2/3 innings this year, and has escaped bases-loaded situations without allowing a run on four different occasions this season.
-VAN ORDEN STARTS FOR DOUBLEDAYS: Right-hander Drew Van Orden makes the start for the Doubledays tonight in his fifth appearance with Auburn and seventh as a professional. Van Orden, the Nationals' fifth-round draft choice this year, went 6-5 with a 3.19 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 87 1/3 innings at Duke University this past spring. The Manhattan Beach, CA was dinged for eight runs on eight hits, a walk and a hit batsman over 3 1/3 innings in a loss against the Spikes on July 8 at Falcon Park. Van Orden made his longest professional outing last time out, but yielded four runs and ten hits over five innings against Lowell on Sunday.
-WICK PROMOTED TO PEORIA : The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Wednesday that Rowan Wick, the Spikes' single-season home run record holder, earned promotion to the Single-A Peoria Chiefs. Wick made an impact right away, drilling a three-run homer in the ninth that helped propel the Chiefs to a five-run frame that sent the game to extra innings. Wick is now hitting .250 with four RBI over his first three games in Peoria. The slugger took just 19 games to break the previous Spikes single-season home run record of 10, set by David Washington just last year. The Cardinals' 2012 ninth-round draft choice currently leads the New York-Penn League with 14 homers, and also tops the league in runs batted in with 38.
-SPIKE MARKS: Jake Stone saw his 20-game on-base streak end two nights agoas he went 0-for-4...Brian O'Keefe was hit by a pitch for the eighth time two nights ago, tying him for the league lead...Four Spikes pitchers - Jacob Booden, Jeff Rauh, Kyle Grana and Nick Lomascolo - are among the top five in the NYPL in appearances this season...Grana's 13.91 strikeouts per nine innings are second-most among NYPL relievers...Alex De Leon is leading the NYPL in runs scored with 31, one more than former teammate Wick...
