Utah Grizzlies News Release
WEST VALLEY CITY, UT - For the second straight game, the Grizzlies Kiel McLeod scored in the games first minute but in repeat fashion the Grizzlies couldn't hold on for the win as Chicago answered with four straight goals en route to a 4-1 victory. The win was Chicago's sixth straight win on the road and it kept the Wolves in first place in the Western Division.
Can you top that, the Grizzlies Kiel McLeod did just that as he beat his season best mark of scoring a goal 32 second into a game on Wednesday in Houston by beating the clock just 30 seconds into Friday's game for his 11th goal of the season. Matthew Spiller and Fredrik Sjostrom were credited with the assists. Chicago tied the game at the 3:04 mark of the game when Colin Stuart lifted a pass over Jamie Storr for his second goal of the season assisted by Derek MacKenzie and Karl Stewart. The Wolves took a 2-1 lead at the 15:56 mark of the period when former Grizzly Greg Hawgood snuck in from the point and took a pass from Steve Maltais for his eighth goal of the season. Maltais and Lonny Bohonos were credited with the assists. Utah outshot the Wolves 14-12 in the period with Michael Garnett making 13 saves for Chicago and Storr stopping 10 shots.
Chicago added to their lead in the second period scoring just 28 seconds into the period when Stephen Weiss redirected a Hawgood shot for his 18th goal of the season. Hawgood and Joe Corvo had the assists. The Wolves increased their lead to 4-1 while Utah was on the power play when Travis Roche picked off a pass and drove the net getting a shot off that Storr made the save on but Derek MacKenzie followed the shot knocking the puck in for his 11th goal of the season and his league-leading sixth shorthanded goal. The Grizzlies continued to outshot the Wolves winning the period 13-9 for a two period total lead of 27-22.
The third period was physical with a couple of fights but neither team found the back of the net endning the game with a three-goal Wolves victory. Utah outshot the Grizzlies for the third straight period by a 9-7 margin.
The final shot total for the game was 36-29 in favor of the Grizzlies with Garnett making 35 saves earning his third victory in four starts against Utah. Storr saw his two game winning streak snapped making 25 saves taking the loss.
The teams will do it again tomorrow night at the 'E' Center with Bikini Night. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 PM (mst).
