Beloit Sky Carp News Release
CLINTON, IA - The Clinton LumberKings got eight strong innings from starting pitcher Dylan Unsworth as they took a 7-4 decision over the Beloit Snappers at Ashford University Field in Midwest League action on Sunday afternoon.
This defeat snaps Beloit's three-game win streak and they slip below .500 to 7-8. Clinton's record improves to 7-9.
Unsworth (2-0) was excellent all day in allowing only five hits and no walks. He retired the Snappers in order in the first, fourth and fifth while also punching out five and garnering his second win.
Clinton jumped on top quickly by manufacturing a run in the first inning against Austin House (0-2). They
waited out two walks sandwiched around a single and Tim Lopes scored on a groundout. The LumberKings added another tally in the sixth when they worked three consecutive walks off reliever Kris Hall following a lead-off double to force in a run. The Snappers pushed across their first run in the seventh when Jake Tanis (3-4, HR, 3 RBI, run) ripped an RBI double to left.
After Beloit cut the deficit in half in the top of the seventh, Clinton exploded for five runs in their half of the inning and blew the game open. Two singles and an intentional walk loaded the bags with one out and Tyler Marlette drew another base on balls to make the score 3-1. Following a strikeout, Jordy Lara grounded a ball through the left side for a single to bring across two runs. A double by the next batter, Jabari Henry (2-2, 3 RBI), was good for two more and stretched the lead to six.
The Snappers did score once in the eighth, as Ryan Mathews singled and later came in on a fielder's choice. In the ninth, they closed to within 7-4, thanks to a bomb of a two-run homer by Tanis, but they could get no closer. Oliver Garcia got the final out to end the contest.
This three game series continues on Tuesday with a first pitch time of 6:30pm. Beloit's RHP Raul Alcantara (1-1, 3.94 ERA) will take the ball against LHP Scott DeCecco (1-2, 2.81 ERA).
