BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Kernels powered past Burlington 8-4 with a season-high 7 extra base hits. Jose Berrios (1-0) picked up the win in his Midwest League debut. J.D. Williams (3-3) drove in 3 runs with an opposite field home run and two doubles. Adam Brett Walker (2-4) crushed a home run to deep left center and tripled home a run.
Jose Berrios (1-0) went 5 innings for the victory as he allowed 2 runs on 7 hits while striking out 5 and walking 2. He retired the final 6 batters he faced. Berrios got out of jams in each of his first 4 innings as the Bees stranded 7 men on base during his outing. Burlington stranded a total of 12 men on base on the night.
With the Bees down 8-4 and the bases loaded with 0 outs in the 9th inning Tim Atherton came out of the bullpen to strike out the side and notch his 1st save.
The Kernels tallied an unearned run in the 1st inning while the Bees tied the game in the bottom of the 1st inning and took a 2-1 lead in the 2nd inning. J.D. Williams scored on a wild pitch in the 2nd inning, tying the game 2-2.
Adam Brett Walker's RBI triple plated Drew Leachman in the 4th inning, putting the Kernels in front 3-2. Another wild pitch brought home Walker, doubling the Kernels lead to 4-2.
J.D. Williams went opposite field for a 2-run home run in the 7th inning, putting Cedar Rapids up 6-2. Burlington's Chevy Clarke tripled and scored in the 8th inning, cutting the Kernels lead to 6-3.
The Kernels added 2 insurance runs in the 9th inning. Walker's solo homer went to deep left center. Williams added a RBI double later in the inning.
Jake Boyd (0-2) took the loss in relief for Burlington, going 4 innings and allowing 4 runs (2 earned).
