Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - With five runs in the first two innings, the Kane County Cougars seemed poised for their fourth consecutive victory, but the Peoria Chiefs had other plans, scoring five times in the seventh to battle from behind and earn a 9-6 triumph on Monday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Peoria (8-8) grabbed the inital lead against Michael Heesch in the top of the first as Patrick Wisdom cracked a two-out, RBI single to knock home Breyvic Valera. That advantage was brief for the Chiefs as the Cougars (7-9) struck for three in the bottom of the first off starter Kyle Helisek.
Chadd Krist drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game at 1-1 while Marco Hernandez cracked a two-run double to put the Cougars on top. Two more tallies came home in the second as the Cougars enjoyed a four-run cushion while Heesch lasted six frames, coughing up just two runs.
Brian Smith (0-1) relieved Heesch in the seventh but surrendered five runs, albeit just one earned. Charlie Tilson singled to start the frame and scored on Alex Mejia's single. Jordan Walton's sac fly brought Gerwuins Velazco to the dish while a Michael Swinson two-run single gave the Chiefs the lead.
Matt Iannazzo allowed a pair of insurance scores for the Chiefs in the ninth with Swinson and Tilson coming through with run-scoring singles. Zach Petrick (1-0) was sharp in two innings of relief but did give up a home run to Dan Vogelbach. Dixon Llorens (S, 3) recorded the final five outs including getting Krist to pop out with the bases loaded to end the ballgame.
The Cougars and Chiefs will wrap up their three-game set on Tuesday with an 11:00 a.m. first pitch at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Right-hander Lendy Castillo (0-0) starts for the Cougars against fellow righty Joe Cuda (1-0). For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
