Burlington Bees News Release

The Burlington Bees bats were red hot on Monday night, cranking out 12 hits, but the Bees left 12 men on base, including the bases loaded in the ninth, in an 8-4 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels (12-5) at Community Field.

Burlington (6-10) had not won a game when trailing after eight innings, but almost changed that in the ninth. It was an 8-3 score to start the frame, but the first four men reached for the Bees on three singles and a walk. Tim Atherton came out of the bullpen with the bases loaded and nobody out in an 8-4 game and struck out Anthony Bemboom, Chevy Clarke and Michael Bolaski to hand the Bees the loss.

Four different Bees players had two hits or more, but unfortunately, the clutch hits did not come in a game that handed Burlington its fifth straight loss.

Reid Scoggins got the start on Monday and allowed two runs, one earned in three innings of work. The first run scored in the first on an error by Pedro Toribio that allowed Bryon Buxton to stroll home for the first run of the game.

The Bees answered that run with one of their own in the bottom of the first. Kyle Johnson singled, stole second and advanced to third on bunt single by Toribio. Sherman Johnson placed a ball perfectly in the left-center gap, but Buxton made a diving grab, allowing just Kyle Johnson to come home on the sacrifice fly.

Brennan Gowens reached on an infield single with one out in the second and came home on a Toribio single to give the Bees a brief 2-1 lead. However, the Kernels answered in the top of third when J.D. Williams scored on a wild pitch. Both earned runs that Scoggins has allowed this year have come on wild pitches.

Jose Berrios (1-0) made his Midwest League debut a memorable one, throwing five innings and allowing just two runs on seven hits and two walks. He struck out five in the outing.

Jake Boyd (0-1) picked up the loss after allowing four runs, three earned in four innings of work. Boyd allowed two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth. Eduard Santos surrendered two runs in the ninth.

Burlington will take on Cedar Rapids in the final game of the series on Tuesday morning at 11:30 a.m.
