United Announces 2003 MLS Schedule
January 7, 2003 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
D.C. United News Release
CHANTILLY, VA (January 7, 2003) - D.C. United will open the 2003 Major League Soccer season at Arrowhead Stadium against the Kansas City Wizards, Saturday, April 12th, as the league today unveiled its 2003 regular season schedule. United will make its home debut the following weekend at RFK Stadium when it hosts the Chicago Fire on Saturday, April 19th at 7:30 p.m. D.C. United's 30-game MLS schedule includes four games (two home, two away) against each Eastern Conference opponent (Chicago, Columbus, MetroStars, New England), as well as home and road match-ups against clubs from the Western Conference. The remaining four games (two home, two away) were determined based on competitive seeding versus non-Conference opponents, according to 2002 regular season performances. The 30-week MLS season allows for U.S. Open Cup mid-week match dates in addition to the possibility of international exhibition games.
"We are tremendously pleased that our 2003 schedule allows for a vast majority of our home games to be played when our fans are best able to attend," said United Senior Vice President and General Manager Stephen Zack. "By fielding a very competitive team in our newly downsized seating configuration, we also look to improve upon the tremendous atmosphere at RFK Stadium. I encourage our fans to make plans now for the home opener, as only 24, 603 seats are available."
United's 2003 MLS schedule features primarily Saturday games with the exception of five weekday matches, one at home, and three Sunday matinees: one against the Earthquakes in San Jose on August 24th, another at home against the MetroStars on September 28th at 4:00p.m. and the last in New England on the 12th of October. United will play eight consecutive Saturday matches before making its mid-week debut on Wednesday, June 11th against Colorado at Invesco Field. The Black-and-Red will close the regular season campaign at home with a 7:30 p.m. contest against the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday, October 25th.
D.C. United continues its Atlantic Cup rivalry with the MetroStars on Saturday, May 10th at Giants Stadium. The teams are set to battle in Washington, DC in a July 5th matinee match-up before finishing the season series with back-to-back games on Thursday, September 25th (Giants Stadium) and Sunday, September 28th (RFK Stadium).
Full season, half season and flex ticket plans are now on sale through the D.C. United office at 703-478-6600. Individual match tickets to the April 19th home opener will go on sale February 1, 2003. Prices range from $16 for Spectator level (endline) seating through $36 for Mezzanine level seating. Group pricing (minimum of 20 tickets) range from $13 (Spectator) to $28 (Mezzanine). Individual match tickets will be available through all TicketMaster outlets, via www.dcunited.com , via www.ticketmaster.com , via TicketMaster Phone Charge and at the RFK Stadium box office.
