New York Red Bulls News Release

SECAUCUS, NJ (January 7, 2003) - The MetroStars today announced they will field an under-17 team in the Super Y-League competition administered by the United Soccer Leagues for the upcoming 2003 season.

The Super Y-League was established as the first building block of developing soccer in North America for elite players that aspire to compete at the professional or international levels. The league provides elite competition for youth players age 14 through 19.

Many of the competing clubs are affiliated with various United Soccer Leagues teams at the professional or senior amateur levels, and with elite level youth clubs.

The MetroStars' Super Y-League involvement continues the organization's strong commitment to developing young players, which it also currently does with the reserve squad MetroStars Black that participates in the New Jersey Champions League.

"This under-17 team is a crucial part of our ongoing youth development program, " said MetroStars President/GM Nick Sakiewicz. "We are taking the next step forward towards completing a fully integrated development system."

The team will utilize the resources of its MetroStars Soccer Academy to chose its Super Y-League players and assemble a coaching staff for the upcoming season.

DC United is currently the only other Major League Soccer team to field a team in the Super Y-League. They won the 2001 U-14 Boys Championship and were U-17 Finalists in 2002.

The MetroStars U-17 team will play in the Metro region of New York/New Jersey against other regional clubs affiliated with the Brooklyn Knights, F.C. Westchester Flames, B.W. Gottchee, Matchfit Academy, New York Freedoms, Ironbound Sporting, PDA, and the Tri-State Academy.
