Galaxy Announces 2003 MLS Schedule
January 7, 2003 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
LA Galaxy News Release
PASADENA, CA (Tuesday, January 7, 2003) - The Los Angeles Galaxy Major League Soccer (MLS) club will kickoff the 2003 MLS season with an eight-game road trip before opening The Home Depot Center on Saturday, June 7 vs. the Colorado Rapids. The 2002 MLS Cup Champions begin their eighth MLS regular season on Saturday, April 5 at 1:00 pm (PT) when they take on the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium in a match that will be televised live nationally on ABC Sports.
"The 2003 season will be a memorable one for our club." said Doug Hamilton, VP/GM of the L.A. Galaxy. " After a grueling eight game road trip, our players will return home to a sold out stadium at The Home Depot Center on June 7th, and will be welcomed by a 2002 MLS Cup Championship banner raising ceremony in their new world class soccer facility."
The Home Depot Center sets a new standard for soccer stadiums in the Americas with an intimate event experience and the highest quality amenities available. Construction of the Home Depot Center began on February 26, 2002, on the campus of the California State University, Dominguez Hills in the city of Carson and is on schedule to be completed in time for the inaugural soccer game on June 7.
The Home Depot Center will also be host to the two marquee events of the MLS season, the 2003 Pepsi MLS All-Star Game and MLS Cup 2003. This will mark the first time in MLS history that a single club has hosted both events in one season.
Following their season opener against the Crew, the Galaxy will continue on a club and league record eight-game road trip with matches against the Dallas Burn (April 12), MetroStars (April 19), San Jose Earthquakes (April 26), New England Revolution (May 10), Dallas Burn (May 17), Kansas City Wizards (May 24) and Colorado Rapids (May 31). The Crew set the previous road record with a seven-game road trip before opening Crew Stadium in 1999.
The Galaxy's MLS regular season schedule includes 30 games in total, 15 games at The Home Depot Center and 15 on the road. Four games (two home, two away) against each Intra-Conference opponent as well as a home-and-home match-up against clubs outside its Conference comprise 26 of the 30 regular-season contests. The remaining four games (two home, two away), are determined based on competitive seeding, according to 2002 regular-season performances.
Highlights for the 2003 home schedule include two visits from the 2002 MLS Cup runner-up New England Revolution (July 4 and August 23) and the 2002 U.S. Open Cup Champion Columbus Crew (August 9 and September 3). U.S. World Cup star Landon Donovan will lead the San Jose Earthquakes for visits on June 18 and October 19.
Overall, the home schedule features 10 Saturday dates with the remaining home games for the Galaxy falling on three Wednesdays, one Friday and a Sunday, including its annual July 4th extravaganza. June, August and September are the busiest months at The Home Depot Center for the Galaxy with 10 home games in the three-month period. Los Angeles' longest homestand during the season consists of a five-game stint from June 28 - August 16.
The club will continue its tradition of fireworks on the Fourth of July at The Home Depot Center. On that day, the club will take on 2002 MLS Budweiser Scoring Champion Taylor Twellman and the Revolution followed by yet another breath-taking fireworks show, one of the largest in Southern California.
Los Angeles closes out the 2003 regular season schedule on the road visiting San Jose on October 25, finishing a home-and-away series versus the Earthquakes.
The Galaxy will play 16 of its 30 games before the league's eighth annual MLS All-Star match at the Home Depot Center. The national and local television schedules for 2003 Galaxy games are being finalized and will be released next week.
Season tickets for Galaxy regular season home games are now on sale. Tickets are available in several price ranges and can be purchased by calling toll-free at 1-877-3GALAXY.
