Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - In a low-scoring game that took over three hours to complete, a throwing error on a strikeout proved to be the difference maker as the Lancaster JetHawks beat the Stockton Ports for a second straight night. The error, committed by Ports catcher Argenis Raga on a strikeout that would've ended the fourth inning, resulted in a pair of unearned runs that ultimately gave the JetHawks a 3-1 victory at Banner Island Ballpark.
Stockton's offense came out hot as James Harris led off the bottom of the first with a double and scored on an ensuing single by B.J. Boyd that gave the Ports a quick 1-0 advantage. Stockton went on to put runners at second and third with one out later in the inning, but JetHawks starter Brock Dykxhoorn (1-0) escaped the jam with two fly balls on the infield to preserve the one-run deficit.
Ports starter Zack Erwin (0-1), making his California League debut, pitched around walks issued in each of the first three innings to keep Lancaster off the board. In the fourth, Erwin was facing Alejandro Garcia with Jamie Richie at second base and two outs. Erwin would strike out Garcia on a pitch in the dirt that skipped towards the first base on-deck area. Raga went to throw to first to complete the strikeout and made an errant throw into right field, allowing Ritchie to score and tie the game at 1-1. After Garcia stole second, Kristian Trompiz singled to right to score Garcia and give the JetHawks a 2-1 advantage, simultaneously knocking Erwin from the game.
Erwin suffered the loss despite both runs allowed being unearned. The let-hander gave up three hits while walking three and striking out six.
Meanwhile, Dykxhoorn settled in for the JetHawks and scattered just three hits over the remainder of his outing. The right-hander picked up the win in his California League debut, going five innings and allowing one run on six hits while striking out six.
Lancaster added a run in the fifth as Garrett Stubbs doubled with one out off of Ports reliever Rob Huber and scored on a two-out single by Ritchie to stretch the JetHawks lead to 3-1. It was the lone run allowed by Huber in an inning-and-a-third of relief.
Angel Heredia, Eric Peterson, and Riley Ferrell (SV, 1) went on to combine for four scoreless innings of relief for Lancaster while allowing just two hits in that span.
Carlos Navas and Ben Bracewell combined to pitch the final two innings scoreless for the Ports. Bracewell was summoned with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth and induced an inning-ending double-play to keep it a two-run deficit.
The Ports and JetHawks wrap up their three-game set on Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Daniel Gossett (1-0, 3.60 ERA) makes his second start for Stockton, opposed by right-hander Scott Weathersby (0-0, 0.00 ERA), who makes his California League debut for Lancaster. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
