Petty Wallops Nuts in 13th, 4-3
April 13, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
For the third time in four days, the Bakersfield Blaze needed more than the standard nine innings to decide a game, and for the second time in three games, the Blaze walked off against the visiting Modesto Nuts. And this time, on a wild School Day at Sam Lynn Ballpark, Kyle Petty mashed a homer off the sunsheld in centerfield to finish Modesto in 13 innings.
Anthony Misiewicz and Jesus Tinoco got the start back in the late morning, and Misiewicz outdueled his counterpart. Tinoco left after 5.1 innings, surrendering three runs. Misiewicz went 6.0 innings, surrendering just a pair of runs and not allowing a hit after the 3rd.
But with the Blaze leading 3-2 in the 7th, Modesto mounted a two-out rally off Kyle Hunter. Three straight singles plated the tying run, bringing the game into a stalemate that last for nearly two-thirds of a game. On the Blaze side, Kyle Schepel and Ryan Horstman each worked two scoreless innings of relief, pitching around jams in the 10th and 11th. For Modesto, Helmis Rodriguez worked nearly half a game on his own out of the pen and Troy Neiman followed with two frames, bringing the contest to the deciding 13th inning.
Isaac Sanchez (W, 1-0) had an easy top half, setting the side down in order with two strikeouts, but Logan Cozart (L, 0-1) was less fortunate. Kyle Petty, who scored the game-winner in the 11th on Monday, rammed a 1-1 fastball deep over the centerfield wall, a walkoff shot that clanged off the sunshield and ended the contest, 4-3.
With over 2,000 fans in attendance, most of them youth, the Blaze ended a fun homestand with a much-needed win and improved to 2-4 on the season. Now, the team heads on the road for a week with four in Visalia and three in Modesto.
