BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Rookie forward David Ullstrom recorded his first career professional hat trick and Justin DiBenedetto added three assists as the Sound Tigers snapped their 11-game winless streak with a 4-2 victory over the Manchester Monarchs on Sunday afternoon at Webster Bank Arena. The Sound Tigers improve to 20-29-3-4 overall. Manchester falls to 34-18-2-5.
Neither side scored in the opening period, but physical play was established as Sound Tigers forward Jean Bourbeau squared off with Richard Clune and Brandon Svendsen battled Manchester defenseman Jake Muzzin in the first 20 minutes of play. The two sides managed just nine shots in the first period and the score was 0-0 until the midway point of the game.
Following an interference penalty to Clune at 10:07 of the second period, David Ullstrom curled from behind the net into the left circle on the ensuing power play and roofed a shot past Jeff Zatkoff for his 10th goal of the year to put the Sound Tigers up 1-0. With just over one minute left in the second period, Ullstrom pushed the Sound Tigers lead to two. Ullstrom curled from behind the net once more, but this time made some nifty stick-handling moves and cut towards the net, beating Zatkoff stick side to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Sound Tigers headed to the third.
Manchester responded early in the third as Dwight King's power play tally at 2:54 cut the Sound Tigers lead to 2-1. Brandon Kozun followed King with a snap shot from the slot at 8:46 that beat Koskinen to tie the game at two. However, Brandon Svendsen put the Sound Tigers ahead for good less than two minutes later with his seventh goal of the year. DiBenedetto notched his third assist of the game on Ullstrom's final goal, an empty-netter with 1:08 to go to give the rookie forward his first career hat trick as the Sound Tigers came away with a hard-fought 4-2 win.
Koskinen made 20 saves to earn his sixth win of the year. Zatkoff stopped 13 shots in the loss.
The Sound Tigers return to action this Wednesday night when they host the Providence Bruins at 7 p.m.
