P-Bruins Rally But Fall Short in Shootout

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins rallied, but fell short to the Worcester Sharks 4-3 in a shootout on Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of 8,572 fans. The P-Bruins received goals from Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman, Zach Hamill and David Ling in regulation and Jamie Arniel and Jordan Caron in the shootout.

After back and forth play for the first ten minutes of the opening frame, the Sharks bit first off a goal from Andrew Desjardins at the 10:20 mark. Providence battled back with opportunities from Hamill and Caron, but they were unable to find the back of the net. Providence's scoring frustrations boiled into two penalties, one of which allowed Worcester to capitalize on the power play to take a 2-0 lead at 16:05 of the first on a goal from Michael Swift.

Providence came out of the locker room fired up and got within one just three minutes into the second when LaVallee-Smotherman tipped in a shot from Matt Bartkowski. Antoine Roussel also assisted on the play. The Route 146 rivals started to get chippy and both teams spent time in the box. However, the Sharks capitalized on the man-advantage at 14:11 of the period as Jamie McGinn gave Worcester its second power play goal of the night. The P-Bruins answered with their own power play goal four minutes later to come within one. Roussel fed Bartkowski at the point and Hamill connected with the rebound for his fifth goal of the season.

Michael Hutchinson continued to be solid in net and kept the Sharks off the board in the third period. On the P-Bruins' third power play of the frame, Arniel found Ling in front, who tied the game 3-3 at 11:18 of the frame. Despite back and forth play the remainder of the frame, the score remained tied and the game was sent into overtime.

After five scoreless minutes of sudden-death overtime, a shootout was needed to decide the game. Two goals from Arniel and Caron weren't enough as the Sharks scored three times and went on for the win in a six-round session. Swift, former P-Bruin T.J. Trevelyan and Dan DaSilva scored for Worcester, with DaSilva's goal serving as the winner.

Hutchinson suffered the loss, blocking 42 shots, plus 3-of-6 in the shootout, while rookie Jeff Jakaitis stopped 29 attempts for the win. He went 4-for-6 in the shootout. Providence went 2-for-5 on the power play and 5-for-7 on the penalty kill.

Providence travels to Bridgeport on Wednesday for the beginning of a three-game road trip that ends with two games in Abbotsford next Friday and Saturday. The P-Bruins return to The Dunk on Friday, Mar. 4 to face Charlotte for Sport Bottle Night.
