Adirondack Phantoms News Release

In a wild, crazy game on Sunday afternoon at the Times Union Center in Albany, Adirondack extended their point streak to seven games (3-0-4) but for the third consecutive game, Adirondack fell in the shootout. The penalty-filled contest ended with the Devils prevailing 4-3. Danny Syvret (7th and 8th) and Michael Ryan (17th) scored for the Phantoms and concluded the week 1-0-3.

The result evens the Time Warner Cable Cup series at three games apiece between the two local rivals midway through the 12 game season series.

In a penalty filled opening period, Danny Syvret gave Adirondack a 1-0 lead at the 9:28 mark on the power play. On a cross-ice pass from Denis Hamel, Syvret scored his seventh goal of the season from the right wing circle to beat Devils goaltender David Caruso top shelf.

Adirondack finished the first period 1-for-3 on the power play while Albany went 0-for-4.

Midway through the second period, Adirondack went on a full 2-minute 5-on-3 man advantage after a tripping minor was called on Chris Murray and an elbowing minor on Tim Sestito. The Phantoms would extend their lead to 2-0 on the power play as Danny Syvret scored his second power play goal of the game on a blast from the point assisted by Erik Gustafsson and Greg Moore.

Albany would storm back with three unanswered goals in a five-minute span. Tim Sestito cut the Adirondack lead to 2-1 on his third of the season. Less than two minutes later, after a turnover in the Phantoms end, Pierre Luc-Letourneau picked up the loose puck and beat Phantoms netminder Michael Leighton to tie the score at 2-2. Jeff Prough would give Albany their first lead of the game at 3-2 on a power play with his first goal of the year.

In the third period, Michael Ryan would tie the score at 3-3 1:18 in on a wild scrum in front of the Devils net. Mike Testwuide from behind the Devils net found Michael Ryan who was stationed in front of the crease and backhanded one into the open net.

Zac Rinaldo took a five minute major on a hit to Albany's Chris Murray late in the third period forcing the Phantoms to kill a power play deep into the overtime. Adirondack's penalty kill came through clutch again. And then after consecutive penalties by the Devils it would be Adirondack to get their chance for a power play goal in the overtime. The Phantoms even had a few seconds of 5-on-3 power play in that stretch but also were unable to score as the game progressed to the shootout for the third night in a row for Adirondack.

Albany forward Adam Henrique had the game-winner in the shootout as he snuck one through the five-hole of Michael Leighton.

Adirondack finished the game 2-for-9 on the power play while Albany went 1-for-8.

Phantom goaltender Michael Leighton finished with 29 saves and recorded his second consecutive shootout loss this weekend while counterpart Dave Caruso stopped 22 Phantoms shots in regulation and all 5 in the shootout to earn his fifth win of the season.

The Phantoms have six games left against the Albany Devils in the Time Warner Cable Cup series including three in a row March 5, 6 and 11.

The Phantoms are 3-0-4 in their last 7 and have not taken a loss in regulation since losing to Syracuse on February 4. On the road, the Phantoms have only lost once in regulation in their last 11 games having gone 7-1-3 since December 28.

The Phantoms return to action on Friday in Montreal at the Bell Centre to take on the Hamilton Bulldogs. Adirondack returns home on Saturday, February 26 as the Phantoms host the Worcester Sharks, the AHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks. Saturday is the Glens Falls Hospital Youth Jersey Giveaway Night for the first 1,000 kids in attendance.
