Time Warner Cable Cup All Square After Devils Win

ALBANY, N.Y. - Round six of the Time Warner Cable Cup needed extra time, as the Albany Devils defeated the Adirondack Phantoms, 4-3, in a shootout Sunday afternoon at the Times Union Center. A season-high total of 5,944 fans were in attendance thanks to the help of a Time Warner Cable ticket offer.
Goaltender Dave Caruso stole the show by making key saves down the stretch and all five in the shootout. Adam Henrique scored the lone shootout goal during the first round.
"I thought we played well," Caruso said. "We've come back in the last couple of games and I really liked what we were doing. We are never out and we are doing all the little things."
Caruso earned his fifth win of the season and fourth in five games. He finished the day with 22 stops.
Offensively, the Devils were led by Tim Sestito, Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond and Jeff Prough.
Two power-play goals by Danny Syvret led to a 2-0 Adirondack lead through the first half of the game. His goals came at 9:28 of the first and 8:22 of the second.
The Devils responded with three straight goals, sparked by Sestito's effort down low. He won the puck in the crease and scored at 12:44 of the second. Stephen Gionta and David McIntyre registered the helpers.
"We had talked about penetrating on the cycle, but not turning the puck over," head coach Rick Kowalsky said. "[Sestito] just kept going and it bounces; he lost his glove and he kept going. There is no question that got us going."
Next, Leblond caused two turnovers in the Phantoms' end - the later led to the goal. Leblond went five hole on Michael Leighton at 14:08 of the middle frame.
Before the end of the period, Prough cashed in on a rebound try with 17 minutes gone by. The goal - the second of his AHL career - came after tries by Henrique and Matt Anderson.
Just as quickly as Albany grabbed the lead, the Phantoms evened things up early in the third. After a great defensive effort by the Devils to keep the puck out of a wide open net, Michael Ryan found a way at 1:18.
Both teams' penalty kill units were tested during the last minutes of the game. Adirondack had to kill off a five minute penalty, starting with 1:14 left in regulation. In OT, the Devils had to fight off two Phantoms' power plays.
Adirondack was led by Syvret's three point night (2g-1a). Netminder Michael Leighton made 29 stops.
Next up, the Devils hit the road for a 7:30 p.m. contest at Springfield on Friday, Feb. 25.
