Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
South Bend, IN - The Hot Rods scored three runs in the ninth inning and had the tying runs on the bases, but a bizarre play saw the game end abruptly in a 6-4 loss to the South Bend Silver Hawks on Tuesday night. Newcomer Burt Reynolds was thrown out at second base after an error, leaving the Hot Rods needing a win in the finale on Tuesday to split the series.
The ninth inning rally started after South Bend scored three insurance runs in their half of the eighth. Trailing 6-1, Julio Cedeno drew a lead-off walk before Mark Thomas struck out. Dustin Biell followed with a double to right, leaving runners at second and third. That's when Francisco stepped up and hit a low laser beam into left-center to plate two runs and cut the Hot Rods deficit to 6-3.
After a walk to Kyle Spraker, South Bend brought on reliever Brian Budrow to replace Brad Gemberling. Budrow struck out Robi Estrada, bringing Reynolds to the plate. A defensive replacement in the eighth inning, Reynolds hit a high chopper to shortstop. Victor Estevez bare-handed the ball and threw wildly to first, allowing Francisco to score and Spraker to advance to third. As the ball trickled away from first, Reynolds tried to advance as well, but he was thrown out at second base for the game's final out.
Despite their best efforts, the Hot Rods couldn't take away a loss for Kyle Lobstein, who allowed three runs over five innings of work. He allowed a pair of runs in the second before a solo home run began the fourth. He finished by allowing three hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Jason McEachern pitched a scoreless inning in his first relief outing for the Hot Rods. Matt Stabelfeld worked the final two frames, allowing three two-out runs in the eighth to give South Bend its much-needed insurance runs.
Andrew Wolcott earned the win for South Bend, working seven innings of one-run ball. He allowed six hits, giving up an RBI single to Estrada in the seventh for the only blemish on his line.
The two teams now meet for the final time this season on Tuesday night at 5:30 PM CDT. RHP Albert Suarez (0-4, 5.06) takes the ball against South Bend LHP Tyler Skaggs (0-0, 4.50). You can listen to the game with Tom Gauthier beginning at 5:15 PM CDT on 1340 AM WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
