Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-Dayton starting pitcher Clayton Shunick and three relievers combined to scatter seven hits while allowing just one run as the Dragons won their third straight, defeating the Lake County Captains 3-1. The Dragons will go for a sweep of the four-game series on Tuesday night. The game was played in two hours, two minutes, making it the shortest nine inning game of the season for the Dragons. A crowd of 8,219 saw the Dragons victory.

Shunick (2-1) worked the first six innings, allowing five hits and one run with no walks and two strikeouts as he won his second straight start. Tzu-Kai Chiu pitched a perfect seventh for the Dragons before Blaine Howell got a double play to avoid trouble in the eighth. Doug Salinas worked a scoreless ninth for his seventh save.

For the third straight night, Lake County scored early to take the lead. Greg Folgia doubled to lead off the second and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.

The Dragons tied the game on one of the strangest plays of the season in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded and two outs, Feiner hit a ground ball to shortstop that was fielded by Casey Frawley, who threw to first to apparently get Feiner and end the inning. But base umpire John Bacon ruled that the ball had struck him in the leg before it reached Frawley and called umpire's interference. Each runner advanced one base in a dead ball situation as Mark Fleury came in from third to tie the game.

The Dragons took the lead in the third. Ryan LaMarre was hit by a pitch to start the inning and went to second on a single by Henry Rodriguez. LaMarre went to third on Fleury's fly out to center and scored on a ground out to short by Cameron Satterwhite to make it 2-1.

Feiner blasted a home run to left field in the fifth, his third homer of the year and second of the series, to make it 3-1 and close out the scoring.

The Dragons finished with four hits. Feiner was 2 for 3 to lead the way. Rodriguez's hit extended his hitting streak to nine straight games.

The Dragons (15-40, 45-79) host the Captains (26-30, 70-55) in the series finale on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Tim Crabbe (2-6, 4.09) will start for Dayton against Brett Brach (4-7, 2.87). The Dragons play at South Bend on Wednesday.
