Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - After a dominating start against the Lake County Captains, Hot Rods left-hander Kyle Lobstein was named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week today. He is the second Hot Rods player, and the first pitcher, to win the league's weekly honor in the 2010 season.
On Wednesday, August 18, Lobstein turned in one of his best performances of the season at Classic Park in Eastlake, OH. He tossed seven shutout innings against the Captains (Cleveland Indians), allowing just four hits in the Hot Rods 6-2 victory. Lobstein struck out seven and, for the second time this month, did not issue a walk in earning his team-high eighth victory of the season.
Looking deeper into the outing, the Tampa Bay Rays second round pick in 2008 had three perfect frames, induced a key double play in the sixth, and allowed just one base runner to advance beyond second base. In seven frames, Lobstein did not allow the Captains a single inning with multiple base runners.
Lobstein's outing is just the latest in a string of strong starts in August. He is 1-1 in four starts this month, posting an ERA of 2.92. He has pitched into the seventh in three of those four starts, allowing three earned runs or less in each. He has also posted 25 strikeouts in 24.1 innings, surrendering four walks during that same time period.
Lobstein is 8-6 on the season with an ERA of 4.20. He leads the Hot Rods and is ranked 5th in the Midwest League with 133 innings. He's surrendered just 130 hits on the year with a team-best 112 strikeouts.
In addition to the Midwest League honor this week, he was named the Rays Minor League Pitcher of the Month in June, posting a perfect 4-0 record and 1.19 ERA, the fourth-best ERA in the Midwest League.
Lobstein makes his next start tonight as the Hot Rods continue a four-game series in South Bend at 5:30 PM CDT. You can follow the game with Tom Gauthier beginning at 5:15 PM CDT on 1340 WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
