Ty Smith Named WHL Player of the Week
October 7, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
Spokane, Wash. / Calgary - Spokane Chiefs captain Ty Smith has been named WHL Player of the Week for the week ending October 6, 2019, as announced by the league on Monday afternoon.
Smith, in his first games back with the Chiefs since returning from the NHL's New Jersey Devils, piled up six points (3G-3A) and a +3 rating in three games, helping Spokane earn two wins.
His first game back came in front of a home crowd on Friday as the Chiefs defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds, 5-1 at Spokane Arena. Smith earned first star honors with two goals and an assist to go along with a +2 rating.
The captain added his third goal of the year -- he scored seven during the entire 2018-19 season -- on Saturday night as the Chiefs cruised to a 7-1 win at Tri-City, spoiling the rival Americans' home opener. Smith was once again named first star.
He wrapped up the weekend with two assists in a narrow 4-3 loss to Everett at home on Sunday evening, earning third star honors. He now has 153 helpers in 197 career regular season games.
Since his return to the lineup, the Chiefs' power play has been outstanding, scoring seven goals in 16 opportunities (43.8%) after starting the season 1-for-12.
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound product of Lloydminster, Alta. currently ranks in a tie for third in WHL defensive scoring and in a tie for second in goals. The first-overall selection at the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft, Smith is the defending recipient of the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as WHL Defenseman of the Year as well as the CHL Defenseman of the Year. Smith was also named the recipient of the Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman Trophy as WHL Scholastic Player of the Year in 2018 and subsequently selected 17th overall by the Devils at the 2018 NHL Draft.
