Collecting four two-run innings the Calgary Vipers (48-26) defeated the Yuma Scorpions (31-49) 10-5 in the continuation of last night's suspended game at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. After resuming the game in the fourth inning the Vipers went on to score two runs in each of the fifth, sixth, and eighth innings while also plating two runs in the first inning an evening ago. C.J. Ziegler led the way with a home run, four runs batted in, and three runs scored. With the win Calgary increases their lead atop the North Division to a game and a half.
Mark Michael (7-2) got the continuation win with four innings of allowing one run on no walks while out of the bullpen Saskatoon's Dan Morari tossed a scoreless inning.
Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Wilver Perez walked to reach base for a league high 47th straight game and C.J. Ziegler launched his 21st home run of the season for a 2-0 advantage.
Yuma cut the lead in half in the second at 2-1 as Arnoldo Ponce tripled and Patrick Brooks collected a sacrifice fly.
The Vipers retook a two-run lead at 3-1 in the third frame when Perez singled, stole second base, advanced to third base on a throwing error, and scored on a Jimmy Rohan run batted in groundball.
Calgary added a run in the fourth inning as Drew Miller walked, advanced to second base on a Louie Templeton groundout, and scored on a two out base hit from Jonny Kaplan for a 4-1 lead.
The Scorpions closed the gap in the fifth when Carlos Leon followed by Joey Gathright singled and Jared McDonald doubled both runners in for a 4-3 score.
In the bottom of the fifth frame the Vipers grabbed those two runs back as Ziegler walked, Chad Ehrnsberger followed by Al Quintana singled to load the bases, Miller singled to knocked in a run, and Templeton collected a sacrifice fly for a 6-3 advantage.
Another two runs were added to the lead in the sixth inning by Calgary when Kaplan doubled, Rohan singled, Ziegler collected a sacrifice fly, and Ehrnsberger drove in a run with a double for a 8-3 score.
Once again two runs were scored in the eighth by the Vipers as Rohan doubled, Ziegler singled in one, and Ehrnsberger collected a RBI two-bagger for a 10-3 lead.
Yuma completed the scoring in the ninth frame when Zach Larson singled, Jesse Alfonso reached on a fielder's choice with Larson safe at second base due to a throwing error, Leon walked to load the bases, Gathright collected a RBI by reaching on a fielder's choice, and McDonald knocked in a run with a hit for a 10-5 final.
The two teams will now play a seven-inning game for Glee Night at 6:30.
Jose Canseco will join the Scorpions on Saturday August 20th at 5:05 PM for Serve and Protect Day along with Baseball Bonanza while before the game Heartland will take on Hell on Wheels in a Celebrity Softball Game benefiting Slave Lake. On Sunday August 21st the series will wrap up with Fan Appreciation Day at 1:35 including a Celebrity Home Run Derby before the game featuring Canseco, Theo Fleury, and Charlie Simmer.
Playoffs for the Vipers will start on Tuesday August 30th.
