Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

HARLINGEN - Tied at 2 in the top of the 16th inning, Edinburg Roadrunner Derek Marshall hit home the go-ahead run, helping his team to a wild 4-2 win on Thursday night at Harlingen Field.

In a game that lasted close to five hours, neither team surrendered a run after the WhiteWings (47-32) tied it at 2 in the seventh inning, putting the game all the way into the 16th inning.

Twice in extra innings, the WhiteWings had the bases loaded with nobody out, but could not bring home a run.

Finally, in the 16th inning, the Roadrunners (32-48) scored the winning run as Jorge Quintero (5-8, 6.60 ERA) received the win while Julio Santana (4-5, 5.03 ERA) took the loss.

WhiteWings starter Alexander Concepcion and the Roadrunners' Julio Castro became involved in a pitcher's duel as the two only allowed two runs apiece.

The Roadrunners started with an early lead in the second inning when former WhiteWing Jonathan Fernandez hit an RBI single. An error by Edgar Trejo at first base caused a second run to score, putting the 'Wings behind 2-0.

The WhiteWings responded the next inning as Wilson Batista turned a double into a run scored as an error allowed Batista to reach from second to third. The throw to third was wild, sending Batista home to score the 'Wings first run.

From that point on, only one run scored in the next 13 innings of play.

Julio Castro went into shutdown mode, giving up just two hits in his next four innings, but in the seventh inning, the WhiteWings finally got through to Castro. David Peralta started off the inning with a walk and advanced into scoring position following the groundout from Leivi Ventura. Batista then hit Peralta home, tying the score at 2.

From there, the two teams remained scoreless.

Relief pitcher Luis Chirinos, on in relief for the WhiteWings, shut down the Roadrunner bats to keep the score tied as he pitched five innings, retiring 15 of the 16 batters faced.

The Roadrunners, in turn, did not allow another run to score, including getting out of a bases loaded jam with no one out in the 10th and 14thinnings.

It took the RBI single from Derek Marshall to finally break the tie as Jonathan Fernandez brought home an insurance run two batters later.

The WhiteWings close out their series with the Edinburg Roadrunners on Friday night at Harlingen Field as Eric Blackwell (7-3, 3.08 ERA) is expected to start for the WhiteWings.
