Caps Clinch Playoff Berth With Win Over Chico

August 19, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals opened up a four-game home series against the Chico Outlaws on Thursday night and were looking to bounce back from an 11-3 loss the night before to the Yuma Scorpions - and they did just that when they emerged with a dominant 12-7 win.

After lacking in the offensive department on Wednesday, the Caps certainly came out swinging on Thursday. Third baseman Carlos Duncan and second baseman Enrique Cruz had impressive nights at the plate with a home run and three RBI each. Left fielder Todd Linden chipped in with two RBI and pitcher Rory Shortell got in on the action, helping his own cause with two RBI as well.

Shortell got the start on the mound and was lights-out for the first three innings, allowing just two hits and no runs. The trouble started when he surrendered three runs in the fourth and four more in the sixth before being relieved by Chad Blackwell. Blackwell contributed with 1.2 innings pitched and no runs surrendered before Jorge Vasquez came in to pitch the last two innings with no runs and only two hits given up with an impressive four strikeouts.

With the win on Thursday, the Caps improved their record to 48-29 on the North American League season and guaranteed themselves a spot in the North Division championship series against the provincial rival Calgary Vipers. The division title is still up for grabs, though, as the Vipers are 47-26 and only sit one game ahead of the Caps after having their Thursday game against Yuma postponed due to weather.

The Caps will continue with game two of their four-game series against Chico on Friday at 7 p.m. for Trappers Night as a tribute to the city's former Triple-A baseball club. The team will play in retro Trappers jerseys and hats, which will then be auctioned off after the game. Also, fans who come to the game dressed in Trappers clothing or bring along Trappers souvenir collectibles will be able to purchase two tickets for the price of one. And there will also be national anthems and a free post-game concert performed by Edmonton folk rock legends Captain Tractor.

The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer, featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Flex packs are available in multiples of eight for $48 less than day-of-game pricing. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
