Barnard goes the distance

San Angelo, Texas---Colts starting pitcher Chandler Barnard won his 11th game of the season and the team's offense hit three more home runs on the way to a 10-5 win over the McAllen Thunder Friday night at Foster Field.

Zach Mandelblatt (13) put McAllen on the board first with a solo home run in the top of the second, but it did not take long for San Angelo's bats to take over. Landon Camp, Clay Calfee and Davis Page led off the bottom of the inning with three straight singles to load the bases. Two runs came into score on a groundout by Mark Ramos and an infield single by Beau Riportella, before C.J. Beatty (16) stepped in and belted a three-run shot to put the Colts on top 5-1.

Thunder shortstop Yaibel Tamayo doubled home two runs in the top of the third, but the Colts answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. Brian Nichols (8) led off the inning with a solo home run and Camp scored on an error to put San Angelo back up by five. Since joining the Colts, Beatty and Nichols have combined for seven home runs and 18 runs batted in.

Barnard allowed solo home runs to Luke Hetherington (4) and Antoin Gray (10) for the last two Thunder runs. The Colts scored thrice more on a Daryl Jones (27) two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh, and on a Beatty single in the eighth to provide the final margin.

Barnard (11-2, 3.31) went nine innings and gave up five earned runs on six hits with one walk and 12 strikeouts. He moved into a tie for first place in the North American League with 11 wins. McAllen starter J.T. Zink (1-5, 8.22) was the loser after he gave up nine runs on 13 hits in six innings pitched.
