Calgary Vipers News Release
After scoring four runs the Calgary Vipers (49-27) left the tying runs on base in their last at-bats and were defeated 7-5 by the Yuma Scorpions (32-49) in a seven inning contest following a resumed game at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers almost completed a miracle two-out rally as down six runs five straight batters reached to get within two but only to leave those two runners on base to end the game. For the first six innings Calgary only mustered one run against former Snake Jon Huizinga (5-5). With the loss Calgary's lead atop the North Division drops to one game.
Stephen Whalen (7-4) took the loss after allowing 11 hits and six runs in five and a third innings. Out of the bullpen Matt Hammons retired the only two batters he faced.
Yuma opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Jared McDonald doubled and Jonathon Jaspe scored him with a run batted in single for a 1-0 advantage.
The Scorpions doubled their lead in the second when Zach Larson, Carlos Leon, and Joey Gathright collected three straight singles for a 2-0 score.
Calgary cut the lead in half in the fourth frame as Wilver Perez hammered his 11th home run of the season for a 2-1 game.
Yuma opened up the game in the sixth inning when Jaspe walked, Arnoldo Ponce singled, Patrick Brooks drove in a run with a base hit, and Larson collected a three-run home run for a 6-1 advantage.
Another run was added in the seventh by the Scorpions as McDonald doubled, Jaspe singled, and Brooks collected a RBI base hit for a 7-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh frame the Vipers threatened as Jeff Giacomini was hit by a pitch, with two outs Perez doubled, Giacomini scored on a wild pitch, Jimmy Rohan followed by C.J. Ziegler walked to load the bases, Chad Ehrnsberger singled for a RBI, and Drew Miller drove in two with a base hit for a 7-5 score but the tying runs would be left on base.
Jose Canseco will join the Scorpions on Saturday August 20th at 5:05 PM for Serve and Protect Day along with Baseball Bonanza while before the game Heartland will take on Hell on Wheels in a Celebrity Softball Game benefiting Slave Lake. On Sunday August 21st the series will wrap up with Fan Appreciation Day at 1:35 including a Celebrity Home Run Derby before the game featuring Canseco, Theo Fleury, and Charlie Simmer.
Playoffs for the Vipers will start on Tuesday August 30th.
