Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes picked up a pair of players today as the Northern League concluded its annual two-day open tryout in Arizona.
Choosing fourth in the first round and third in the second round, pitching coach Rick Forney selected catcher Robert Wirth and infielder Scott Wallis, respectively.
Wirth, 24, is a graduate of Bellevue University, an NAIA baseball powerhouse in Nebraska. Wallis, 23, a Canadian from Vancouver Island, played ball at North Dakota's Jamestown College, another strong NAIA school.
"I was very impressed with both guys," said Forney. "Robert showed some decent power and he looked good behind the plate. As for Scott, I think you could put him at second base, third base or even at shortstop and he'd be comfortable."
Winnipeg was initially supposed to just have one selection, that in the second round. But the Goldeyes snared the fourth overall pick held by Sioux Falls, thanks to a deal done last year with the Canaries involving outfielder Kris Cox for a player to be named later.
Forney's two selections were among a total of 12 made by NL clubs. Winnipeg, Gary, Calgary and Joliet each selected two of those dozen, while St. Paul, Sioux City, Kansas City and Schaumburg chose one player each. Sioux Falls, Fargo-Moorhead, Edmonton and Lincoln either passed or traded away their selections.
Wirth and Wallis will be in town when the Goldeyes open training camp on Thursday, May 5. They play the first game of their eight-game exhibition season two days later in Fargo, the same place they open the regular season on Friday, May 20. Winnipeg plays its home opener Friday, May 27 against Sioux City.
