Runners can help themselves with a little exercise while helping the children of Manitoba at the same time.
Joined by officials from the Winnipeg Goldeyes Field of Dreams Foundation, members of the Manitoba Runners Association today announced the Re-Max "Catch Us If You Can" Downtown Run.
Set for 8 a.m. on Sunday, June 5, the race will donate net proceeds to Field of Dreams which, since its inception in 1995, has helped raise more than $600,000 for children's charities in Manitoba.
"We're always happy to become involved in events that benefit children's charities in Manitoba, especially something directly tied to Field of Dreams," said Goldeyes general manager and Field of Dreams treasurer Andrew Collier. "And when it incorporates something as important as exercise, then that's even better."
Sponsored by the Manitoba Runners Association and part of the Canadian Footwear Series, the event, which will consist of a 10-kilometre race as well as a five-kilometre fun run and walk, starts at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.
From there, the course heads south to Assiniboine, west to the Legislature, east to Main, south into Norwood, back to Main and then the Convention Centre.
The cost to participate is $25 for the 10 K run and $17 for the 5 K walk. Participants can register either on-line at www.mraweb.ca or by calling MRA members Mario Potenza (943-7517) or Leni Campbell (477-5185).
"I'm constantly looking for ways to help out kids," said Potenza, the race director and a member of the MRA's board of directors. "Knowing the number of children they help out every year, we wanted Field of Dreams to be the charity that benefited from this event and couldn't be happier we have been able to do that."
Among the participants will be Ontario's Ed Whitlock, 74, world record holder for the marathon in the 70+ age class. The oldest man to run the marathon in under three hours, he set the standard two years ago in a time of 2:59:09.3 at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.
