Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers used their first two picks in Tuesday's Northern League Draft to select left-handed pitcher Sam Jansen and righty Ken Falconer, a Lethbridge native.

After winning a coin-toss with the league's other expansion franchise, the Edmonton Cracker-Cats, to determine which team would have the first choice in the draft, the Vipers chose Jansen, a 24-year-old who hails from New Berlin, Wisconsin.

Jansen, who will be entering his first season of professional baseball played collegiately at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he appeared both on the mound and in the outfield.

Selected with their second pick, Falconer is a former draft-pick of the Seattle Mariners and is the fourth Canadian and third Albertan to join the Vipers. He played last season at Everett of the Northwest League (Class-A).

The draft follows a two-day free agent tryout camp being held at the Texas Rangers' spring training facility at Surprise, Arizona.
