
Two Innings Break Open Game

Scoring seven runs in two of the middle innings the Calgary Vipers (22-15) defeated Jose Canseco and the Yuma Scorpions (11-23) 9-2 before 2273 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Tied at one the Vipers broke the game opened in the fourth and fifth innings with three and four runs respectively. Overall Calgary collected 17 hits with Jonny Kaplan leading the way with four and also two runs batted in. On the mound Edward Valdez (2-1) tossed seven innings for the win while allowing two runs and striking out six while J.J. Whetsel posted a one, two, three inning and Dan Morari struck out two in a three-up, three-down frame. Chris Britton (2-1) took the loss after allowing four runs in three and a third innings.
Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as Aaron Dunsmore smoked his first professional home run for a 1-0 lead.
Yuma tied it up at 1-1 with a home run of their own from Zach Larson in the third frame.
The Vipers went back in front in the fourth when Kevin Price, Jeff Giacomini, and Bryan Burke all doubled for two runs while Jonny Kaplan tripled in another for a 4-1 advantage.
The Scorpions got a run back in the fifth inning as Larson singled and J.J. Muse doubled him home for a 4-2 score.
In the bottom of the frame Calgary increased their lead to 8-2 after four runs when Justin Tellam singled, Louie Templeton also collected a base hit with Tellam scoring after a fielding error on the play, Dunsmore also singled, both Burke and Kaplan knocked in runs with base knocks, and after a Wilver Perez walk Drew Miller also walked for a run batted in.
Another run was added in the seventh by the Snakes as Giacomini and Kaplan singled followed by a sacrifice fly from Perez for a 9-2 advantage.
Calgary now hits the road to Maui to take on the Strong Warriors in a nine-game in eight-day series starting July 4th at 8:05.
The Vipers will return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium in Tuesday July 12th at 6:30 to take on the Edmonton Capitals.
The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USAA Pride and the Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
