Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

BOSSIER CITY, LA - Brett Smith and Jeff Kyrzakos both scored hat tricks and the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs scored 10 goals for the first time since 1999 Friday night, destroying the Mississippi RiverKings 10-1 at the CenturyTel Center. The ten goals scored and nine-goal margin of victory both tied franchise records for the ‘Bugs, who start the season 1-0 for the second time in the past three years.

Smith tied a team record (for the second time in his career) with six points in the game after scoring three goals and three assists. Kyrzakos was the first to finish out the hat trick, while Jamie Milam (1g, 2a) and Steven Crampton (3a) also finished with three points. The ‘Bugs owned the special teams, finishing 5 for 11 on the powerplay and scoring three shorthanded goals.

The ‘Bugs needed less than three minutes to get on the scoreboard this season as Clay Plume's shot from the point was deflected in by Brett Smith for a powerplay goal at 2:55. Another powerplay goal followed less than five minutes later when Jeff Kyrzakos re-directed a Justin Aikins shot to make it 2-0. Aikins then got into the act with a shorthanded goal, beating Kyle McNulty through the five-hole to make it 3-0 after one period. Mitch Love and Tyler Sheldrake also dropped the gloves in a back-and-forth first period fight.

Smith's second goal came on a shorthanded breakaway early in the second and was followed by a nice cycling play that led to Travis Clayton's goal and a 5-0 advantage. Mississippi's lone goal from Chris Richards on the powerplay then broke up Jeff Harvey's shutout late in the period, but Kyrzakos scored again with half a second left to give the ‘Bugs a 6-1 lead through 40 minutes.

Bossier-Shreveport kept pouring it on in the third as Kyrzakos completed the hat trick with an early powerplay goal, which was followed by Blaznek's open-net tap in a few minutes later. Jamie Milam scored on the powerplay and then Smith capped off his hat trick with the ‘Bugs third shorthanded goal of the game off an assist from Jeff Martens.

Jeff Harvey stopped 24 of 25 shots in the game to earn the win in his Mudbugs debut, while Kyle McNulty made 16 saves on 26 shots. The RiverKings finished 1 for 6 on the powerplay and Bossier-Shreveport ended with a 26-25 shot advantage.

The Mudbugs and RiverKings will now travel to Southaven, MS to finish out this weekend's home-and-home series tomorrow night at the DeSoto Civic Center. Opening puck drop is set for 7:05 pm, with pregame coverage starting at 6:45 on News Radio 710 AM KEEL.
