Two Grand Slams Doom Patriots

Bridgeport, CT - Luis Lopez and Angel Berroa both hit grand slams in the 3rdinning as the Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Somerset Patriots 13-7 on Wednesday afternoon at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

Patriots led 1-0 after the 1st off a Josh Pressley RBI. But the 3rd saw the Fish hit two grand slams in one inning for the first time in franchise history. The Lopez shot came off Patriots starter Derell McCall who put three more batters on before exiting the game in lieu of Casey Cahill. Cahill quickly surrendered a blast to Berroa and just like that, it was 8-1. McCall (0-1) finished just 2.2 innings, yielding seven runs.

The Patriots clawed back with a run against starter Miguel Mejia in the 4thand two against reliever Chris Rivera in the 6 th before the Bluefish answered with two in the 6th against Cahill and three against Luke Sommer in the 7th. Patriots added three against Matt Smith over the final two innings but stranded a season-high 17 runners on base. Mejia (1-2) finished 5.0 innings, walking six but allowing just two runs.

Mike Hernandez had a big day at the plate, going 4-5 with three RBIs while Jeff Nettles went 2-3, driving in a run and walking twice.

Somerset (10-16) and Bridgeport (15-12) finish off their three-game set Thursday night. Kevin Reese (1-0, 2.81) deals against Pat Ryan (0-2, 5.29) with coverage beginning at 7:00 pm on 1450 WCTC-AM and www.wctcam.com.

NOTES: Nettles continued a couple of streaks in the game. He has nabbed an RBI in seven straight games while recording six straight multi-hit games...Hernandez was hitting .182 before the day. He boosted his average to .233.
