
Twins Take Advantage of Wild Pitches, Walk off Rays in 10th

Elizabethton, Tennessee - Down to their final out in the bottom of the ninth inning and trailing by two runs, the Elizabethton Twins scored twice on back-to-back wild pitches to tie the game. After giving up a run in the 10th, the Twins retaliated with two on an error and a wild pitch to walk off the Princeton Rays and win 7-6.
In his sixth start of the season, Ben Gross was fantastic through his first four innings. He struck out three and allowed just one hit. Princeton struck for three runs with two outs to chase Gross from the game.
Denny Bentley and Steven Cruz combined for 4.1 innings of relief, each allowing just one run while striking out nine.
Max Smith countered the Ray's three-run inning with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, his third straight game with a home run and fourth of the season.
Elizabethton added a run in the bottom of the eighth after Wille Joe Garry Jr. tripled and Anthony Prato grounded out to bring Garry Jr. home from third.
After Cruz held Princeton off the board in the ninth, Smith was hit by a pitch and Ruben Santana doubled with two outs. Back-to-back wild pitches with Kyle Schmidt at the plate scored Smith and Santana and force extra innings.
While Osiris German allowed an unearned run in the top of the 10th, the Twins took command in the bottom of the 10th to walk off.
With the international tiebreaker rule in effect and Will Holland on second, Garry Jr. walked and with Holland on third, Anthony Prato reached on an error by Princeton second baseman Brett Wisley to score Holland.
While Matt Wallner struck out for the second out of the inning, the third strike got away from Princeton's catcher Kevin Melendez, another wild pitch that allowed Gary Jr. to score from third and win the game.
The Rays and Twins will battle in the rubber match of the series, Thursday at 6:30 p.m., the final Thirsty Thursday promotion of the season where select sodas and beers are just $1.
