Burlington, N.C. - The Royals could not finish the series and season sweep of the Pirates on Thursday night, falling 10-8 in a three hour and 37 minute duel.

With two outs in the top of the first, the Pirates took a 1-0 lead after Jake Wright walked with the bases loaded. Burlington responded with three runs in the bottom half to take a 3-1 edge.

In the second inning, the scoreboard inverted. Bristol scored three and Burlington plated one to even the game at four.

Between the third and sixth innings, the Royals built up a comfortable lead. Kevon Jackson brought home Will Hancock on a groundout in the third, Maikel Garcia hit an RBI single in the fourth and Logan Porter smacked an RBI single in the sixth to give Burlington a 7-4 lead.

However, the Pirates erased the deficit and took control in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Ernny Ordonez walked with the bases loaded to make it 7-5. Then, Eli Wilson launched a grand slam to left field to put the Pirates ahead 9-7.

The Royals cut that deficit to 9-8 on a Michael Massey RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, but Fernando Villegas responded with one of his own for the Pirates to bring the game to its 10-8 final score.

Bristol reliever Yoelvis Reyes earned the win on virtue of being the last pitcher on the mound before his team's five-run seventh to retake the lead. Burlington lefty AJ Franklin took his first professional loss after tossing that seventh inning.

The Royals hit the road on Friday to start a three-game series with the Princeton Rays. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
