Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
JUPITER, Fla. - The Palm Beach Cardinals (35-28, 64-68) left 12 men on base and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position in a 3-0 loss to the Jupiter Hammerheads (25-38, 57-76) Monday night in the finale of a four-game series at Roger Dean Stadium.
With the loss the Cardinals finish an even 9-9 against the Hammerheads in the annual Fins n' Feathers season series while still holding the all-time advantage 103-80. Palm Beach is now 4.5 games out of first place with seven remaining before the regular season wraps up Sept. 4.
Richard Castillo (4-4, 3.86 ERA) allowed a season-high 10 hits and three earned runs in 6.0 innings to suffer the loss, his first since July 24. The fifth-year righty added a walk and a strikeout to fall to 2-4 in 11 career appearances against the Hammerheads.
Jupiter once again took advantage of having a couple Florida Marlins in the lineup on rehab assignment, as catcher John Baker tripled to leadoff the bottom of the first and came home to score on a single from Dallas Poulk. Baker struck again later in the fourth with a one-out run-scoring single to center and Hammerheads' regular Jose Torres got in on the action with a second-inning RBI-single to account for all Jupiter scoring. Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez also went 1-for-4.
Ted Obregon led the Cardinals with a pair of hits, Kyle Conley recorded his 18th double and Xavier Scruggs tied a personal season-high with three walks. Righty Chase Reid struck out three through two perfect innings of relief.
Hammerheads' right-hander Jose Rosario (3-1, 2.35 ERA) tossed five scoreless innings for the win while A.J. Ramos recorded his third save of the series and 24th on the season with a perfect ninth.
Palm Beach will look to rebound tomorrow night in the series opener against first-place Bradenton. Right-hander Eric Fornataro (7-12, 3.53 ERA) is scheduled to face a yet-to-be-announced Marauders hurler at 6:35 p.m. from Roger Dean Stadium.
