Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL (August 29th, 2011) - *Charlotte first baseman Michael Sheridan drove in four Stone Crab runs to help drop the Fort Myers Miracle, 5-2, at Hammond Stadium on Monday night.
Sheridan delivered the decisive blow in the top of the seventh inning. The 6-2, 205-pound left handed hitter smashed a 2-2 pitch from Miracle reliever Matt Tone off the wall in right center field to plate two and break a 2-2 tie.
The Miracle jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when third baseman Anderson Hidalgo tagged Crabs starter Joe Cruz for a two-run single that scored Oswaldo Arcia and Dan Rohlfing.
In the fifth inning, Sheridan began his large offense night off Miracle starter B.J. Hermsen. With two outs and runners at first and second, Sheridan hit a chopper just out of the reach of Hermsen that caromed off second baseman Alexi Casilla and into center field allowing Tyler Bortnick and Mark Thomas to score.
Casilla, making a rehabilitation start from the Minnesota Twins, was removed from the game one pitch after the Sheridan single in the fifth. Casilla finished the game 0-for-2 with a flyout and ground out to first.
Cruz (1-0) picked up his first win in his second start with the Crabs on rehab from AA Montgomery. The 6-4, 190-pound native of Monterey Bay, Calif. tossed seven innings and giving up just the two runs on the Hidalgo single.
Matt Tone (2-5) was the losing pitcher after giving up the go-ahead runs in the seventh. Hermsen gave Fort Myers a solid six inning stint in a no decision. In his fourth start for the Miracle, Hermsen fanned six and stranded eight while giving up a pair of runs on eight hits.
Despite falling in the season series finale, the Miracle finished the 2011 rivalry with the Charlotte Stone Crabs with a 10-8 record. Fort Myers (59-73, 25-38) will head on the road to St. Lucie, Fla. to take on the Mets in a two-game series at Digital Domain Park beginning on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
