Maine Celtics News Release

PORTLAND, ME - The Maine Red Claws (0-1) returned to the hardwood in Maine for their opening night matchup with the Austin Toros (1-0) in front of a packed house at the Portland Expo. Sporting a lineup featuring seven rookies, the young Red Claws committed 26 turnovers, falling to the visiting Toros 103-97. The early loss of team leader Mario West to injury further hampered Maine.

The Red Claws got off to a good start by making a 10-4 run late in the first quarter with the help of a three-point play made by forward Tiny Gallon with 17 seconds left. The Toros fought back early in the second quarter to eventually tie the game at 28. The tempo of the game only intensified as both teams picked up the energy and aggressive play. A 13-5 Claws run ended the first half, but the lead still belonged to the Toros with a score of 45-44.

Marcus Cousin had a double-double with 21 points, 12 rebounds and also had 3 blocks. Kevin Palmer led the Toros off the bench with 19 points, while Squeaky Johnson pitched in with 15 of his own to lead Austin to their first win of the season. Paul Harris led the scoring for Maine, chipping in 20 and adding 10 rebounds. Fellow rookies Tiny Gallon and Champ Oguchi added 17 points each.

The Red Claws will continue their double header with the Toros tomorrow night in Portland at 7 PM. A few hundred tickets remain for Magnetic Schedule Night, with all fans in attendance receiving a 2010-11 schedule, courtesy of Unitil. The Woodside One Wheelers will perform at halftime.
